R&D Tax Credits Wolverhampton - Explained by our Specialists

Multi-award-winners - Hamilton Wood and Company-01

There are still many Companies in Wolverhampton who feel their routine, day-to-day activities aren't eligible for a claim and are not benefitting from this relief.  It's now estimated that round 80% of businesses who could claim, haven't.

The Incentive and it's background

First introduced in the year 2000 by the labour Government, the R&D tax relief scheme was planned to encourage businesses to invest in developing new or improved products and services.  Since their inception in 2000, there has been over 250,000 successful claims.  A total of over £26.5 billion of R&D tax credit relief has now been claimed.

Many Companies haven't claimed due to a general lack of understanding as to what constitutes R&D.  The words 'Research and Development' often make people wrongly assume they need to be a dedicated research laboratory in order to claim. The reality however is that many Companies who could claim haven't. If your business is seeking to do something in a new and improved way, you might qualify.

Ongoing support with complex R&D tax claims.

"Our industry had a 'spot check' by HMRC. Naturally, I was very worried.  I can't thank the team at Hamilton Wood & Co. enough.  They dealt with HMRC directly and  I must say I was impressed with the speed and efficiency that the matter was dealt with. Our claim was approved and we were delighted with the support from Chris at Hamilton Wood throughout.  I couldn't have done it on my own."

Fast and efficient R&D claims process.

"As a business owner, I very rarely get a spare moment.  I was encouraged to talk to Simon at Hamilton Wood and Co. to see if the improvements to our back-office functions and processes might qualify.  After a quick conversation by phone I was assured that whilst not all my activities did qualify, that some of them did and we could move forward on them. I was involved for less than 2hrs over a 12 week period and got a playout in no time at all."

The Benefits of R&D Tax Relief for Your Business

The R&D tax credit incentive helps the Government encourage businesses to innovate.  When a business develops something new, it has the effect of moving the industry forward.  R&D tax relief make economic sense for the Government.  They reason for every £1 they give back to a business, they recover up to £7 back on a multiplier basis.  The sums given back to a business are paid as wages subject to tax, and then spent on goods and services that are also taxed.  This is a case of the Government giving to receive.

Some of the key benefits are:

Improve cash flow

Receive a substantial payable credit for your Company or reduce your CT liabilities considerably.

Competitive Advantage

Make sure you maximise all monies your Company can recover to strengthen your position.

Further Innovation

Reinvest money in your Company and continue to innovate.  Claim back money from your activities.

CAN CHARITIES CLAIM AND SOLE TRADERS CLAIM?

No. Charities, universities, sole traders nor partnerships are able to claim R&D Tax Credits. The business claiming must be a corporate, liable to UK corporation tax. This can include group structured companies and businesses with operations in other countries.

MY PROJECT FAILED, CAN I STILL CLAIM?

Potentially, yes.  While the overall success of the project is irrelevant in terms of making a claim, what does matter is that the project qualifies for this type of relief. If you are unsure if your project qualifies, call one of our team today and we will be able to help you.

MY COMPANY IS MAKING A LOSS, CAN I STILL CLAIM R&d?

For loss making Companies, the benefit of the scheme is even more generous which can be a big help when trying to grow your business.  For loss making companies, any eligible R&D tax sums can be surrendered that will trigger an almost immediate payment for your business.

WHICH OF MY PROJECTS QUALIFY FOR AN R&D TAX CLAIM?

It is important that each project is professionally assessed on its' own merits to see if there are recoverable expenditures. The project should be developing a new or appreciably improved process, or product, where the way forward wasn't certain.

What Are You Waiting For?

If you fail to claim in a given time, you will lose your money forever and you won't get it back.
